Burel Mountain Hotels

Burel Mountain Hotels values one of the Portuguese regions with the greatest tourist potential of the country: Serra da Estrela Natural Park and its relationship with wool and burel.

It all began with our first hotel, Casa das Penhas Douradas – Burel Expedition Hotel, which seeks an expeditionary relation with the region, with exploration proposals contextualized by the scientific expedition to Serra da Estrela, organized by the Sociedade de Geographia de Lisboa in 1881.

In 2018, we opened the second hotel, also a house (Casa): Casa de São Lourenço – Burel Panorama Hotel, which reborned from the old Pousada de São Loureço. A panoramic hotel, overlooking the Zêzere Glacial Valley, where burel and the design are clear invitations to contemplate and appreciation the landscape in silence.

Burel Mountain Hotels is more than a project, it is a mountain lifestyle, its culture and its people. A true tourism experience in the Serra da Estrela mountain range.

At 1500m altitude everything changes.

A House on the Mountain scented by wild aromas of jasmine, heather and rosemary.

Casa das Penhas Douradas is the first hotel of the Burel Mountain Originals family. Situated in Penhas Douradas, at 1500 meters of altitude, on the upper plateau of Serra da Estrela, this 4-star hotel is ideal for those who seek a direct contact with the Mountain, in silence and surrounded by the comfort of pure wool.

CASA DE SÃO LOURENÇO *****

Burel Mountain Hotels

Casa de São Lourenço, opened in October 2018, is the only 5-star mountain hotel in Portugal. It’s located at 1250 meters altitude. Has panoramic mountain views to the Zêzere Glacier Valley and the village of Manteigas.

The hotel was reborn from Pousada de São Lourenço, one of the first ones in Portugal designed in 1949 by Rogério de Azevedo. The Pousada has become a House (Casa), the second of Burel Mountain Originals, to reinforce the hospitality, a concept of “Houses that are Hotels”, and an integral part of Burel Mountain Hotels, which kept Maria Keil’s beautiful furniture recovered on the inside…one of the most important Portuguese artists of the 20th century, while giving space to the contemporaneity of several Portuguese designers. Casa de São Lourenço takes us on a discovery of Portuguese design through its decorative elements to continue the story begun by Portuguese artist Maria Keil, 70 years ago.

Burel Factory

Burel Factory, the Burel Mountain Originals factory and one of the best examples of industrial tourism in the country. A space of design and production of burel, the most traditional wool fabric in the local wool industry, now used in a very different and innovative way. Today continues producing using the same machines and traditional equipment, from the time the industry was still made by hand, thus ensuring the production of unique, different and high-quality fabrics, preserving the past, reinterpreting it and raising it into a story of the future.
